The Giles Family Makes $10,000 Donation to the Sigma Nu House Corporation of Memphis

The Giles Family Makes $10,000 Donation to the Sigma Nu House Corporation of Memphis

Memphis, TN – Jill and Bill Giles, the parents of Chris Giles ’16, have donated $10,000 to the Sigma Nu House Corporation of Memphis. The Sigma Nu House Corporation of Memphis has established a sound business model for the corporation, with the Active Chapter paying a parlor fee to the House Corporation each semester to fund long-term property maintenance, and the Giles Family donation will go directly to capital improvements, including house repairs and renovations.

In Memoriam: C. Allen Cooke ’53

Rev. C. Allen Cooke

Rev. C. Allen Cooke was born in Memphis to parents H. Brent and Dorothy A. Cooke. He was raised in Memphis and attended Rhodes College, where he was a Rotary Harris Scholar and president of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He went to the Episcopal Divinity School in Boston, dedicating his life to more than 60 years as an Episcopal priest in Tennessee and Alabama. He married Sara Dee Goodloe. Allen loved all people, made friends wherever he went, and ministered to the sick and elderly. A lifelong Vols fan above all else, Allen taught each of his grandchildren his favorite “Go Vols!” cheer. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, and two sons.

80th Anniversary Celebration Announced

On April 8 and 9, 2016, the Epsilon Sigma Chapter will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the construction of our beloved chapter House. The celebration will include a Wild Game Cookout, an Alumni Chapter Meeting, a Family Lunch, a Tribute to Goodbar Morgan, a Campus Tour, and the White Rose Banquet. Please join us for this momentous occasion!

In Memoriam: Kenneth Silvey ’56

Kenneth Silvey ‘56

Kenneth Silvey, 82 of St Augustine, Florida formerly of Atlanta died Monday, January 30, 2016 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas George and Flo Silvey.Survived by his wife Brenda Kay Silvey of 35 years and grandson John Allen Bagwell in St Augustine, FL.Surviving Children are Douglas Silvey residing in Gainesville, FL; Steven and Lani Hastings in Atlanta, GA Jamie Graham in Ellijay, Ga. His son Daniel Silvey of Fort Lauderdale, Fl is deceased. Other Grandchildren are Stephen and Michael Daniel Silvey; Hampton, Madison, and Reagan Hastings. Other close family members were Connie and Raymond Bennett of Jacksonville FL; Carney and Norma Freeman of Chattanooga, TN; Steve and Betty Freeman of Chattanooga.

In Memoriam: R. Rascoe Rhea ’69

Dr. R. Rascoe Rhea ’69

Dr. R. Rascoe Rhea was born Feb. 2, 1947, to Porter and Emma (Cannon) Rhea, and grew up on a farm. He was a 1965 graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, TN, and graduated at Southwestern (now Rhodes College), where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He married his high school sweetheart, Simms Montgomery, on Sept. 9, 1967, in Pulaski, TN. He was a member of the Marguerite Dean Dental Society, and also active in the Naval Reserves, while he earned his DDS (graduated in 1972) at The University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis.

In Memoriam: William Stanley Myers ’58

Dr. William Stanley (Stan) Myers, Sr. ‘58

Dr. William Stanley Myers passed away on Friday, May 8, 2015. He was surrounded by the family he loved so well when he left this life.

Stan was born on September 4, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee. While still a teenager, Stan delivered newspapers in Baptist hospital every morning before attending school in order to help support his mother, brother, and sister. It was a pattern throughout his life; working hard in order to give to others. The kindness and encouragement of doctors at the hospital spurred his interest in medicine. He attended Southwestern (Rhodes College) and then UT Memphis for medical school.
